Types of Residential Water Heaters

Ready to look into water heaters but not sure where to start? In this guide, we’ll break down the four main types of water heaters—gas, electric, tank, and tankless—to help you figure out which one is the perfect fit for your home or business.

Stay tuned to understand the ins and outs of each type, and make an informed decision that’ll keep your water warm and your energy bills low.

Gas Water Heaters

Gas water heaters are one of the most common types to have installed in your home. If your home was built before 2003, we can expect to find a gas-powered water heater.

They are excellent tank water heaters that are able to heat enough water for your house. The bad news is they are the least sufficient water heaters available and will cost you more money in return.

You may want to consider an electric or tankless water heater. Let’s review those types next.

Electric Water Heaters

When an electric water heater is installed, it will operate by heating two elements inside the tank. It is simple and comes in many different sizes, allowing you to customize the size depending on how much hot water you need.

The other option for electric water heaters is a hybrid pump that offers the same efficiency as an electric water heater. Hybrid water heaters are best fit for an open room or basement.

They take the heat out of the surrounding air and convert it to heat water that’s inside the tank.

When there’s not enough heat available in the surrounding air, the unit switches over to using the direct heating elements to meet your hot water needs.

Tank VS. Tankless Water Heater

Tank water heaters are what we think of when discussing residential water heaters. They are known as the reliable workforce many people are familiar with. Year to year, the upgrades that are made in these tank water heaters are mainly those which prolong tank life.

Tankless water heaters, also known as on-demand or point-of-use water heaters, cost more upfront than storage tank water heaters. Still, on average, they last more than twice as long. The high-efficiency Rinnai tankless water heater may last longer than 25 years.

Water Softener FAQ

How often should I replace my water heater?

The average lifespan of a water heater is about 10-15 years, but it can vary depending on factors like usage and maintenance. If yours is hitting the 10-year mark or showing signs of wear like inconsistent heating or leaks, it’s time to think about a replacement. Regular check-ups can extend its life, but all good things must come to an end eventually!
